원문: **Lawless Lawyer (2018).** How come you guys don’t talk about how good this is? I’m only four episodes in, so maybe things will change, but so far I’m liking how breezy it is.
It’s very watchable, and I’m surprised by how much it is Vincenzo before Vincenzo. I love how this show is like a mix between that and Two Weeks.
The ML is excellent at playing a carefree and smart-ass character, yet then quickly switching to a heaviness & sinister quality when no one’s around.
He’s really so good in pretty much everything I’ve ever seen him in.
I recommend this so far, especially for people who liked the aforementioned Vincenzo.

원문: I recently completed a mid-long form drama called **Scandal** from 2013. It’s about the long term ripple effects of a kidnapping. This hard luck police detective kidnaps a rich and corrupt chaebol’s son in retaliation for his own son’s preventable death in a bombing orchestrated by said evil chaebol to cover up the criminally shoddy construction his company engages in. The show starts in 1988 on the eve of the Olympic games, briefly stops over in 1991, then time jumps to the present to follow the long term fallout of this kidnapping.
So as you can imagine it’s “Oh what tangled webs we weave” the tv show. The show was full of juicy moral dilemmas and rich yet deeply damaged characters and relationships that evolved in fascinating ways over the course of the series.
It’s a full cast of mostly engaging characters, I’ll highlight my favorites. I watched this in large part because Shin Eun Kyung was in it and as I expected she was the drama’s MVP. Her acting was masterful as the biological mother of the kidnapped Eun Joong and the wife of the main antagonist. Ki Tae Young as the “fake” Eun Joong, an orphan Shin Eun Kyung’s character brings in to the household as a replacement for her missing child, passing him off as the missing son to everyone else, also really impressed me. He himself didn’t even know he was a fake and his resulting desperation to stay connected to the only family he knows creates great drama. These characters have the best arcs in the show.
I really disliked Park Sang Min in the few episodes of **Giant** I saw him in, I thought his acting was terribly bland, but here he really excelled in a villain role and as a bonus the continuity destroying way his dye job changed all the time provided some much appreciated levity amidst all the angst.
As soapy as this show is, with its morally compromised characters and birth secrets and attempted murders and long running affairs and a supremely uncomfortable flirtation between a supporting character and her unacknowledged >!half brother!< it never felt contrived to me, there is a logic to how the plot unfolds and how the characters behave. The characters transgressions, their reversals of fortune, their fumbling attempts at redemption, every alliance and betrayal all felt earned. As you might expect from a 36 episode drama, there is some filler here (primarily in the form of repetitive flashbacks/characters brooding as ballads wail in the background) but not as much as you might think given the drama's length. I do wish the FL had been allowed the dimension most of the other characters had, she was mostly just a downtrodden yet still plucky goody two shoes who I never found interesting in the slightest, but the show seems to realize she's the weak link and she doesn't have the level of screen time you'd expect of a supposed "lead" character. If you're in the market for a drama longer than average but can't commit a full 50 hours I would recommend this one. I liked it a lot.
