shapeofmyhrt: Just finished **The Golden Spoon** and boy, do I have a lot of feelings. It’s one of the few dramas I’ve watched that I can say had me by the throat every episode and will stay with me for a while.
It’s based on a webtoon of the same name and centers around a poor kid who stumbles across a magic spoon that allows him to switch lives with a rich classmate. The spoon also gives him three chances to change his mind. Despite the fantastical premise, the drama is a lot darker than I expected. Its portrayal of a family facing the endless misfortunes and humiliations of poverty is really bleak, but also helps you understand if not condone the ML’s decision to use the spoon and trade said family for another. The drama does well to convey that it’s not just money he’s after, it’s what money represents: survival and freedom and *choice*, luxuries he can barely afford if at all in his current circumstances.
They paint a fairly black and white picture of society and class – almost every character is either ultra wealthy and abuses their privilege or dirt poor and can’t catch a break. But the main characters feel very human and each come with their own shades of gray.
I’ve seen complaints that the drama turns into a makjang by the second half. I won’t even deny it; the plot twists are nuts and I loved every second of it. At the same time, the story never loses its grip on reality. The actions and motivations of all the characters feel consistently true to life. I would say at certain points it tests your patience and your faith that it won’t go off the rails, >!the 10-year time skip almost made me lose it for real,!< but the payoff of sticking with it is totally worth it, imo. The ML is definitely one of the more nuanced I’ve seen and needless to say, not a conventional K-drama hero. I love that he’s both book smart and street smart, which sometimes makes some of the other characters feel a little incompetent and dull in comparison. Yook Sungjae has incredible range and it’s such a shame he doesn’t get more recognition for this role. The number of faces he wears is impressive - soft-hearted poor kid at the end of his rope, same poor kid masquerading as a ruthless, calculating chaebol, >! and, for a marvelous half episode, a shitbag playboy; I’m still lamenting there aren’t more scenes of him in his rocker mullet and red suit!<. The one thing that wore on me a little with this character arc is that his pursuit of the life he wants becomes a bit of a >!Sisyphean ordeal. Maybe it’s commentary on what he truly “deserves”, having taken something of a shortcut with the spoon, but it’s a frustrating take on fairness to me, especially given how hard he works to earn it and simultaneously hold onto his conscience!<. The romance is nothing to write home about but feels like more of a B plot anyway. I like that they’re positioned as >!fated mates!<, though kind of >!ironic!< given that the whole drama is about the ML trying to forcibly change his lot in life. I like Lee Jongwon as the SML as well and I’m glad >!he gains more agency towards the end. That said, his immediate transformation from crappy, lazy rich kid, albeit with god awful parents, to model son with a heart of gold felt pretty unbelievable to me.!< I was terrified that the destination would ruin the entire journey, but the ending is well done; I don’t think it could’ve been resolved any other way. This is not a light, happy drama, but it kept me engaged from start to finish and is ultimately, I think, a really poignant dissection of how people grapple with and make the most of the cards they’re dealt and the choices they make in life.

Also watched the first episode of **Tastefully Yours** and this looks so promising. Already love the FL/ML chemistry and funny interactions. 😜
My social media keeps showing me snippets of **Spring of Youth**, another new drama which I’m tempted to start watching. 👀🍿
That said, my current watch schedule/line-up is starting to beef up..might need to scale it back. 🤣

Marunchan: I’ve been watching **Grand Prince** and I have mixed feelings. I am really enjoying the performances, but some of these costume decisions really don’t work. Facial hair aside (don’t love >!the pencil mustache on ML!<), around episode 5 the FL >!cuts her hair!<, and for some reason, the production team thought having the lead actress wear a wig would be fine, but jesus cheese is it BAD. Every scene with the FL (which is most of them) has me distracted by the bad wig. I hope it gets better!

I like them all so far but noticed they’re all 10 or 12 episodes only.. what happened to 16 episodes? Is this the new K-drama norm now?

shapeofmyhrt: If my review sways even one person into watching this, I’ll be so happy, haha. I can understand why it isn’t more highly rated. Obviously for many subjective reasons (e.g. some people seem to have no sympathy at all for the ML, while I found him to be incredibly sympathetic), but specifically 1)the drama does not end neatly, 2)as I said, it’s pretty unrelentingly dark. If you’re more or less comfortable with those points, then you should absolutely give it a shot.
